Whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, be sure to check with your obstetric provider ahead of time. If you have a healthy pregnancy, you’ll likely to be able to travel with few limits. Be sure to follow any recommendations or restrictions you might be given. Consult cdc.gov for most recent Zika precautions.
When you have the OK to travel during pregnancy, there’s plenty you can do to stay comfortable.
· Drink plenty of water.
· Plan frequent breaks.
Even if you don’t need to use the restroom, taking time to walk around can help you feel better and decreases the risk of blood clots (in legs and lungs) that can be caused by sitting for long periods of time.
· Be prepared for motion sickness.
Traveling by plane has a few additional considerations. First, find out the airline’s policy on travel during pregnancy — just to make sure you’ll be allowed to fly. Most airlines require passengers to be less than 36 weeks. To minimize swelling in your feet and ankles, take occasional walks up and down the aisle. When you’re seated, flex and extend your ankles often (i.e. “do the alphabet with your feet”).
If you’re traveling near the end of pregnancy, consider bringing a copy of your prenatal records. You’ll be able to easily share the information with a local health care provider, in case anything happens while you’re away from home.
